International Women's Day event, 8 March 2024
We support women & girls in Eldoret, Kenya, who have stomas & continence issues following fistulas, many of which are as a result of prolonged childbirth. We send them stoma supplies as they do not have access to them. We want to set up a clinic.

Story

Winthrop Gardens will be marking International Women’s Day with an event at Wickersley Community Centre, 286 Bawtry Rd, Wickersley S66 1JJ (Community Room under the Library) on Friday 8th March between 3.30pm and 5.30pm.

Tickets for this event, available from Winthrop, are £10 and include refreshments – hot drinks and home-made cake!

All proceeds after costs will go Chameleon Buddies a grass roots charity founded by Gill Castle in 2022.

Gill will be familiar to many as the first person to swim the English Channel with a stoma. Gill has lived with a permanent stoma following childbirth complications. This experience led her to set up Chameleon Buddies to other women with a similar experience. She is particularly determined to support women in Kenya living with a permanent stoma without the support of a welfare state or an NHS like us. Some of these women don't even have access to the basic supplies needed to manage living with the life changing condition of a stoma and have been found using plastic bags and rubber bands.

A stoma bag in Kenya costs about £5 and the cost of taking a stoma nurse to Kenya for a week of clinics is £1500.

We'd really like to help Gill and the Chameleon Buddies help this group of women. And anything we can do to help them establish a permanent Stoma and Continence Clinic in Kenya would be just fabulous
