Story

Marathon complete! Thank you so much to everyone who donated, especially the flurry on the day which was just what I needed to power through. We're so close to the goal now if anybody fancies a last-minute donation!

I set off at about 8:30am and sent my husband off to the first of many café stops, which we used as safety check-in as well as an opportunity to top me up with snacks and water. He also joined me for 8km for moral support. I finished at just about 8pm, having been joined by more family and struggled through the last five kilometres with my mother in-law in the dark and absolute pouring rain! At this point, we took the small detour you can see in the screenshot due to it being very wet and dark, we thought it might be safer to stick to the road. Overall, I spent about nine hours walking, but accounting for breaks (and smaller catching-my-breath stops throughout), it was closer to a 12 hour day.

It was a mostly cloudy day which didn't make for the best pictures, but was certainly better for my skin and overall health!

Thanks again everyone for your support and your help, I'm very glad to have been able to make this goal a reality and to help a very good and important cause in the process.

Hi! My name is Anna, and I'm hiking a marathon in the Peak District during National Suicide Prevention Month (moved from Sunday 10th to Sunday 17th September 2023 due to adverse weather conditions) to raise money for Shout!

As a Shout volunteer, I text people experiencing depression, anxiety, or suicidal thoughts on a weekly basis. It's a privilege to be able to play a small part in people's lives, to touch on something that's hurting them at the moment when they need it most - I believe that Shout is such a crucial service that can genuinely save lives, especially in situations where picking up the phone and physically speaking to a service like the Samaritans can feel too much to bear. It's something I'm proud to be a part of.

Dealing with mental health issues can often feel like an endless, uphill struggle. With GP surgeries struggling and NHS talking therapies racking up huge waiting lists, services like Shout are more important than ever.

By taking on this very literal uphill struggle, I'm hoping to be able to support the work Shout do even more, and give back to a service that has taught me a great deal along the way.

Shout is the UK's only 24/7 text service for anyone struggling to cope with their mental health. We respond to 1,500-2,000 requests for support every day and have taken over 1.5 million conversations with people who are anxious, depressed or suicidal.

Every £10 Shout receives can pay for a conversation with someone in crisis, and could save a life.

£25 can help us reach disadvantaged communities that most need mental health support.

£50 means that five children, young people and adults could receive potentially life-saving help.
