Campaign by Refuge (RCN 277424)
Team Refuge is running in one of London’s most creative and inspiring boroughs half marathons.

Story

One woman in four will experience domestic abuse at some point in her lifetime and on average two women are killed each week in England and Wales by a current or former partner.

Refuge is the largest single provider of specialist services to survivors of domestic, sexual and gender-based abuse and runs the freephone, 24-hour National Domestic Abuse Helpline that provides the first step to women escaping abuse.

Those experiencing domestic abuse often feel trapped, fearful and powerless. Running represents freedom, courage and empowerment. We run from danger and towards a place of safety so it feels right to run for this cause that is so close to my heart. I know the training for this race will take time, planning and a degree of optimism that it is possible. It will also demand enough self- belief that a new identity, that of a strong runner, can emerge if I invest the time and build my confidence. A process not dissimilar to the journey taken by many when leaving an abusive relationship.

I chose Hackney for the half marathon as these streets were my home and work for many years.

The Weekend is that of my 46th birthday so celebrating new beginnings for all women needing to make a fresh start with their children.

By kindly sponsoring me today you are helping to save and change the lives of thousands of women and their children. Thank you
