Anna was admitted into St Marys Hospital Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at 4 weeks old. She was given the last rights on the first evening of her admission, as they expected that she only had hours to live, and in the following weeks a suspected diagnosis of biliary atresia was proving difficult to establish.

As a result of the diligence and persistence of the head of the unit and his team, a positive diagnosis was made just in time for a referral to Great Ormond Street for surgery that saved her life and would at least buy her more time.
