Story
As many of you probably are aware, Evelyne was diagnosed with Polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis nearly two years.
It was a very challenging and emotional time at first, as we were not sure what this meant for Evelyne and how this would impact on her life. It was an illness that we had only heard of in respect of ‘arthritis’ in older people. We had certainly not been aware that different forms of arthritis could affect children!
Evelyne was amazingly brave and initially had to have several medical procedures where she was put under general anaesthetic, where steroids were injected into all of her poorly joints, like her knees, fingers, toes, ankles and wrists.
Since October 2022, Evelyne has had to take a weekly injection of methotrexate which, on the positive side has helped her joints and reduced the autoimmune reaction in them.
The negatives however are that this injection really stings her and it makes her feel a bit sick and have a tummy ache for a day or two afterwards. She has also had to have a blood test, once every two weeks, as the medication can affect how her liver works. Evelyne has also had sessions of physio to help strengthen her muscles.
In October this year, the injections and treatment will stop and the amazing team around her at Birmingham Children’s Hospital will watch and monitor carefully to ensure that there is no sign of the disease coming back. They will monitor Evelyne until she is 18 years old.
Throughout our entire journey, the medical team at Birmingham Children’s Hospital have been the best. They have supported us as a family and have provided Evelyne with the best possible care, knowledge and reassurance.
Evelyne understands that it could be that the arthritis comes back … maybe in 1 month, a year or 10 years … or it may never come back! But we feel so reassured to know that the team around Evelyne are here to help, every step of the way, no matter what ❤️
To celebrate the end of her treatment in October, Evelyne has decided to climb Snowdon to raise money for Birmingham Children's Hospital, so that the money can go to helping other children who need their help.
Evelyne has always been determined to never allow her arthritis to dictate what she can and can’t do - so I have no doubt that she will make it all the way to the top!
If you are able to donate, Evelyne will be so so grateful. Thank you for reading our story ❤️❤️❤️
