Story

Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s June 2021, but I have not allowed this neurodegenerative condition to deter me from my everyday life. I have been raising awareness of the many symptoms this condition has, as most people are only aware of the tremor. Some other visible symptoms include gait (walking) and general slowness. However, this is only the tip of the iceberg. Many symptoms known as non-motor symptoms are hidden, such as: constipation, sleep disorders (RBD/REM), anxiety, depression, hallucinations, smell, swallowing, and many others.

Parkinson’s is the fastest growing neurodegenerative condition in the world, currently affecting 153,000 people, this is equivalent to 1 in every 37 people being diagnosed with Parkinson’s at some point during there lifetime. The cause of the condition is not known, as scientists believe it is a combination of genetic and environmental factors.

Excellent advancements are being done in the UK by Parkinson’s UK (PUK) and Cure Parkinsons. Whilst globally, there is the Micheal J Fox Foundation and Parkinsons Foundation in research (there are many more).

I am personally involved in many research groups with PUK, providing the diversity that is required for research. Funding is required for many projects that PUK involve themselves in, and we are looking for a cure if not for my generation but for my children and your loved ones.

Until the above is in place we know exercise is good for the brain and if done correctly creates new neuro pathways; much research has proven this. New trials in this space include SPARX3, which is due to be completed in 2029, and will have further evidence on the effect of exercise for people with Parkinson's.

I will be embarking on a 150 mile trek in Nepal, around the Annapurna Masif (Circuit), trekking to altitudes of up to 6000m visiting Thorung La Pass, Annapurna Base Camp, High Camp and much more, I’m looking to complete this in 21 days.

I hope you can support me by donating whatever you can, every little bit counts (I use these same words to the boxing session I teach to fellow Parkie’s when exercising – EVERY LITTLE BIT COUNTS!)

Anyone can get Parkinson’s. It gets worse over time and there’s no cure. Yet. Funding research into the most promising treatments, we’re getting closer to a cure. Until then, we're improving life for people with Parkinson’s, and the people in their lives. Together we'll find a cure.
