Story
Since being diagnosed with multiple myeloma in April 2022, I’ve joined a whole new community of myeloma patients, and I have experienced just how valuable the support and research that Myeloma UK provide, is.
Multiple myeloma is a fairly rare form of blood cancer and until pretty recently, it was little understood. Thanks to charities like Myeloma UK and the incredible work of people like my haematologist consultant & team at UCH, there is now a much better outlook for people like me with this incurable (but treatable) cancer. Research to improve diagnoses, treatment and care for people with myeloma is absolutely critical, and that’s what Myeloma UK will be able to do more of, with your donation; however small.
My original fundraising plan was to work towards running to 5km, having spent most of the last two years on one or two crutches. That was thanks to a large plasmacytoma in my left hip, courtesy of the myeloma. But as a recent MRI scan found another (smaller) lesion in my lower spine, I’ve been advised to make this a walk or walk/run combination, depending on what orthopaedics say (referral pending to asses risk)… Either way, it will be the furthest I’ve been on foot since January 2022 so I’m expecting a challenge!
My goal is to complete 5km in under an hour if I’m able. I have been training with my physio on the treadmill and around where I live, doing some walking and some jogging which is very exciting, as I wasn’t sure I’d ever do that again after my hip surgery. And this exercise will help get me into good shape to start chemotherapy in January in preparation for my Stem Cell Transplant next summer. So your support is massively appreciated on a personal level as well! :)
