Story

Wirral Hospice St John's relies on donations and fundraising activities to help the charity keep caring for patients and their loved ones at a time of most need. Thank you for your kind support. Why I'm Taking on the Camino de Santiago Trek for Wirral Hospice St John's

In October 2027, I will be taking on the challenge of walking the Camino de Santiago to raise money for Wirral Hospice St John's.

For me, this challenge is about much more than completing a trek. It is about supporting a place that I have seen make an extraordinary difference to people's lives.

As a nurse specialist, I spent many years caring for people with life-limiting illnesses and referring patients and families to hospice services. Time and again, I witnessed the difference that truly personalised, compassionate care can make when people are facing one of the most vulnerable periods of their lives. Hospice care is not simply about end-of-life care. It is about helping people live as well as possible, supporting families, relieving distress, providing dignity, and ensuring that nobody faces difficult times alone.

My connection to the hospice is also deeply personal.

When my father-in-law became ill, the hospice was there for him and for our family. He was a retired GP who had spent much of his life caring for others. When the time came that he needed support himself, the hospice provided the compassion, expertise and humanity that made such a difference. Knowing he was cared for with dignity and kindness brought enormous comfort to those who loved him.

Today, I am privileged to work as a Clinical Educator at Wirral Hospice St John's. Every day I see the dedication, skill and compassion of our staff and volunteers. I see the commitment they bring to supporting patients and families at some of life's most challenging moments. The care provided is exceptional, but what stands out most is the kindness. It is the reassuring conversation, the gentle support, the willingness to go the extra mile, and the genuine compassion shown every single day.

Although the hospice provides essential services to our community, it remains a charity and relies heavily on fundraising and donations to continue its work. Every contribution helps ensure that patients and families receive the support they need when they need it most.

Taking on the Camino will be a significant challenge for me. There will be many miles, plenty of blisters, and no doubt moments when I question why I signed up! But knowing that every step will help support the work of the hospice will keep me going.

If you are able to support me, no matter how small the donation, you will be helping Wirral Hospice St John's continue to provide outstanding care, comfort and compassion to local people and their families.

Thank you for helping me make every step count. ❤️
