Story
Annie and her daughter Rachel are raising money for Friends of Grahamstown and District and Development (https://www.fogadd.org) charity.
Grahamstown or Makhanda as it is now known, is a city of 140,000 people in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. It was founded in 1812 and is home to Rhodes university. 90% of its inhabitants are black or coloured and deprivation levels are high even by South Africa’s standards
Annie is a paediatrician who first worked in Grahamstown as a medical student in 1986. This inspired her to become trustee of Fogadd when it was started in York 21 years ago. She saw at first hand the effects of poverty and the risk of illness and accidents in children living there as have the other trustees who have visited since.
The charity’s aim is to raise money to help improve the life chances of the children and YP of Makhanda through using their local connections in SA to distribute the monies directly to schools in Grahamstown, without incurring admin costs.
The funding enables pupils to receive a better education with the aim of enabling them to gain university places to become the professionals that South Africa needs. The charity also funds day care centres that provide wrap around care to young children who live in the most deprived households
Rach is Annie’s daughter who works as a sports consultant and is a sports enthusiast!
This is Rach’s first Half Iron Man triathlon :
1.9 km swim, 90 km cycle and 21 km run
She’s doing this at Castle Howard in N Yorks on Sunday 23rd July
Annie is doing a 10km run.
Any monies raised will help children in Grahamstown directly
Thank you so much for your donation
