🤔What?
Have you ever done a burpee? They are an intense body weight exercise that combine squats, planks, push-ups, and jumps - activating nearly every major muscle group - and are custom designed to spike your heart rate and fatigue you FAST. There's a quote out there that "Doing 20+ burpees can feel like a never-ending loop of pain."
I will be undertaking a month long (30 day) challenge to complete 10,000 burpees. Yes that's right 10,000, throughout September. That's an average of 333 burpees every day for an entire month. I have baseline tested it and it's gruelling! But I wanted to aim high to stress the importance of the work this charity wants to achieve to bring awareness to a little known and potentially fatal heart condition.
❓Why?
Tom Barrow was my kind and humble brother in-law who sadly passed away in November 2023 from a cardiac arrest caused by an undiagnosed heart condition, Brugada syndrome. He was a devoted and loving husband to Anna, and father of 3 boys Eddie, Archie and Stanley. It is truly tragic to be writing these words but his legacy will go on through the work of the Tom Barrow Brugada Trust whose mission is deeply rooted in raising awareness and funding research into this rare and potentially fatal heart condition.
Here’s what the trust aims to achieve:
- 🧠 Advance understanding of Brugada Syndrome and other heart conditions through public-benefit research.
- 🧪 Support medical research by funding researchers—especially those in Wales—who are working to diagnose, treat, and prevent these conditions.
- 📣 Educate the public about the risks and symptoms of Brugada Syndrome to promote early diagnosis.
- ❤️ Alleviate suffering by improving outcomes for individuals affected by heart rhythm disorders.
📝🎁How to get involved
I would love for you to donate what ever you can to support this cause but there are also some other ways you could get involved. The challenge is open to anyone to partake in at any level, completing 500, 1,000, 5,000 or like me 10,000 burpees in the month of September. I will be sharing the build up and the pain of the burpees themselves on social media (Facebook and Instagram) and using the hashtag #Burpees4Brugada.
