Anthony Russell is raising money for School of Hard Knocks

South Downs Way 100 miles · 14 June 2025

School of Hard Knocks runs courses that use sport to tackle issues surrounding unemployment, antisocial behaviour, crime and health. We teach responsibility, motivation, teamwork, respect and discipline - all of which allow individuals to take responsibility for their actions and context.

Story

Thank you for visiting my JustGiving page!

I’m taking on the challenge of running the Centurion South Downs Way 100-mile event to raise as much money as possible for the School of Hard Knocks (SOHK). This incredible charity uses sport to support young people in schools who are at risk of exclusion. As a former rugby player, now reliving my rugby years through my rugby-obsessed child, and married to an educator who has worked in challenging schools, this cause is especially close to my heart.

SOHK’s unique approach, combining rugby, mentoring, and personal development, helps young people facing adversity in school to overcome challenges and thrive. Their programs reduce school exclusions, increase engagement, and help young people build more positive school experiences and brighter futures.

Across the UK, too many young people face exclusion due to poverty, mental health struggles, and instability. Without proper support, many fall into cycles of violence, unemployment, and low self-worth.

The reality in UK schools today:

1 in 6 students suffer from anxiety, ADHD, or depression, affecting their engagement.

300K students were suspended from state secondary schools in just one term.

3,500 students were permanently excluded in the same period.

With school funding in crisis, access to life-changing support is rapidly disappearing. SOHK is stepping in to fill the gap, offering structure, consistency, and hope.

DONATE TODAY and help me support SOHK in leveling the playing field for more young people across the UK.

SOHK empowers young people to rewrite their stories through three key pillars: 🏉 Sport – Rugby builds resilience, discipline, and teamwork.

🤝 Mentoring – 1:1 and group support to help young people navigate challenges.

👥 The Power of Team – A strong community that nurtures belonging and self-belief.
