Story
This September, I will be running the Great North Run half marathon to raise vital funds for Ahead Of The Game Foundation.
The foundation aims to provide free rehabilitation to those diagnosed with cancer and strives to support not only an individual’s physical health, but also their mental health and wellbeing, which is especially important post diagnosis. They offer many different treatments and therapies which are unavailable on the NHS, as well as offering a wealth of knowledge and support.
Brain tumours receive less than 1% of funding from the national spend on cancer research compared to other cancers, yet it is brain tumours that kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer. The foundation supports Brain Tumour Research by funding vital research within this massively underfunded field.
The foundation’s founder, Dave Bolton, is currently living with a glioblastoma and is in the top 2% of the world’s survivors, after being given 3 months life expectancy in 2015. He set up the foundation as he wanted people to realise that there is hope and that there is another option; to stand up and take control of their situation.
Jud and I were in contact with Dave, looking in to which other treatments and options that they could offer in addition to what Jud was already accessing elsewhere, but unfortunately, we ran out of time. I have since been in contact with Dave about using funds raised to offer treatments in Jud’s name to others who are living with cancer. This was a wish of Jud’s; to be able to support others who were less fortunate than himself in being able to financially access these services.
Thank you and much love,
