On 20 June 2026, I will take part in my longest-ever one-day cycling event, Chase the Sun North: 322 km with 3,300 metres of elevation gain.

To prepare for this challenge, I have cycled the length of Portugal from Chaves to Faro in seven days and conquered Tenerife's highest and toughest climbs. These events have all been stepping stones towards my ultimate goal: the 40tude Challenge — 476 km and 6,567 metres of climbing over three and a half days.

This challenge is about much more than cycling.

2025 was, without question, the most difficult year of our lives. My husband was diagnosed with bowel cancer. We were told by the surgeon that some of the complications he experienced were extremely rare and that, because he was healthy, young, strong, exercised regularly, ate well, rarely drank alcohol, and had never smoked or used drugs, there was little reason to expect them. Yet they happened.

Our lives changed forever.

Cancer was never something we thought would affect our family. We did everything we believed would reduce the risk, but cancer does not discriminate. It can affect anyone, regardless of age, fitness, or lifestyle.

Through this challenge, we want to raise awareness of bowel cancer and support the vital work being done to improve prevention, early detection, treatment, and ultimately find a cure. If sharing our story helps even one person seek medical advice sooner, it will be worthwhile.
