Action on Postpartum Psychosis supports women and families affected by Postpartum Psychosis (PP) across the UK. We provide information and peer support, facilitate research into PP, raise awareness of this rare yet severe postnatal mental illness and campaign for improved services.

Andersen Ward are taking part in the Miles for Mums and Babies challenge!!

Throughout all of May 2024 Staff, Mum’s and families are going to be walking, running, toddling and pushing buggies with the aim of altogether completing 150 miles to represent the distance between the Mother and Baby units in the North West and how far some mums have travelled from the north of wales to reach the help they need .

Ten #MilesForMumsAndBabies Facts

1 in 5 women develop a mental illness during pregnancy or within the first year after having a baby.

The average stay in a Mother and Baby Unit is 8 weeks.

Action on Postpartum Psychosis has been campaigning for more MBUs for 10 years.

1 to 2 in every 1,000 mothers experience postpartum psychosis.

More than 1,400 women experience postpartum psychosis each year in the UK.

It’s just over 10 miles to walk between the Coombe Wood Perinatal Mental Health Unit and East London Mother and Baby Unit in London (11.1 miles).

There are 22 Mother and Baby Units in the UK.

The first Mother and Baby Unit was at the Bethlem Royal Hospital in London.

It’s just under 500 miles to cycle from NHS Lothian Livingston Mother and Baby Unit in Scotland to Jasmine Lodge Mother and Baby Unit in Devon (494 miles).

There’s still no Mother and Baby Unit planned for women in Northern Ireland.

Action on Postpartum Psychosis (APP) is a UK charity. We’re here to make sure mums, parents and families are supported through postpartum psychosis – a severe, but treatable, form of mental illness that occurs after having a baby and affects 1400 new mums in the UK each year.

We offer information and peer support, facilitate ground breaking research, raise awareness and campaign for improved services.
