As an SES-Raleigh Bursary winner of 2024, I could not of had ever expected how impactful the experience was. I embarked on a 210 Km hike throughout the Drakensburg mountain range in South Africa, worked in communities and the ‘ bush’ of environment. From going to the toilet at night and hearing the leopard growling at us, to learning how to communicate with people from all walks of life it really changed my life.
I believe the biggest lesson was the deep level of thankfulness, understanding that everything has been a blessing even to the food we get packaged and ready to eat.
I am joining this Fundraiser to ensure people have another amazing chance at something like this or another great bursary.
On Saturday, 20th September 2025, we will embark on a personal trek to raise vital funds for the Scientific Exploration Society (SES). This remarkable charity is dedicated to empowering young scientific explorers and adventurers around the globe by providing grants for essential research and environmental expeditions.
SES also plays a crucial role in funding the SES-Raleigh Explorer Bursary Award, which enables young, underserved people aged 17-25 to participate in fully funded Raleigh expeditions to breathtaking locations such as Costa Rica, South Africa, and Borneo. Last year, we successfully sent 7 young explorers on this life-changing journey, and we are determined to do the same again this year. I was fortunately chosen for this opportunity and it completely changed my outlook on life. I will be embarking on this trek to ensure people in similar positions have such a chance.
Founded in 1969 by Colonel John Blashford-Snell, one of the UK's most prolific explorers, SES has made a significant impact towards conservation efforts, and with the recent announcement of a Royal Patron, the Society is more committed than ever to its mission. Through its initiatives, endangered species have been discovered, studied, and protected; indigenous knowledge preserved, and vital ecological systems conserved. SES has inspired generations of young scientists and explorers, instilling in them the importance of safeguarding our planet for future generations.
Support our trekkers and help us to reach our target of £25,000. Every donation counts, and your contribution will directly impact the lives of these young adventurers and help continue the legacy of exploration and conservation that is so desperately needed today.
