Health inequity is a policy issue that has life changing and ending effects on both a national and global level. In the US, the average diagnosis delay for Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, a chronic connective tissue disorder, is four times longer for women than for men. In my own journey with EDS, this extra delay caused a lot of physical and emotional stress, even leading me to develop chronic pain. However, my problems pale in comparison to more vulnerable communities. Half of our world's population, over 3.5 billion people, do not have access to essential health care. This inequity manifests itself in deadly ways, causing life expectancy for low income countries to be 18 years shorter than in high income countries on average. Partners In Health (PIH) is a global health organization restoring social justice by bringing quality health care to the most vulnerable around the world. The money donated to this fundraiser will go directly to PIH, and will be put to use providing some of those 3.5 billion people with a lifesaving human right that many are currently denied.
