Story

Thank you for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Lorraine was diagnosed with grade 3 breast cancer in January 2025. She started her chemotherapy in February, which was quite brutal. She continued receiving treatment and dealt with each obstacle as they presented. Then in May/June, a lump appeared at the top of her leg. She mentioned it to the nurse in her next appointment, so it was noted. The lump then looked like a bruise, which just got bigger, they were now calling it a hematoma. A few weeks later, this was replicated on her other leg. Lorraine's last dose of chemotherapy was on 24th June. By 11th July she was admitted to Darent Valley Hospital, Dartford, where she stayed for 13 weeks. Her legs were open wounds, which had to be regularly cleaned and dressed, very painful. The medical staff realised her treatment had caused this, but were still referring to hematomas. A biopsy was eventually done. Lorraine came home at the beginning of October, where she had 6 weeks, with James looking after her and tissue nurses checking in to do the redressing of her legs twice a week.

Lorraine had received some positive news from her last scan, as the cancer had not spread anymore, since her last chemotherapy treatment. The surgeon booked her in for a mastectomy on Wednesday 3rd December. Lorraine went for a pre op assessment on Tuesday 25th November, but was unwell and was taken back to Darent Valley Hospital. She had a serious infection now and was on antibiotics. James spoke to the surgeon, who came to see Lorraine on one of my visits there. James showed him photographs of her legs, which were worse than he knew about. It was decided the mastectomy operation would be too much for her at that time. However, he wanted to try and operate on her legs to aid healing, by cutting away unviable tissue. It was from then, that we were told that she had Toxic Epidermol Necrolysis (TEN). She was operated on, on the 3rd, but when she came out into ITU, she was critical, she had sepsis and multiple organ failure. James, myself and Glenn were with Lorraine, when she passed away on Thursday 4th December. I think she knew we were there.

It is apparently quite a rare condition, so if we can help to raise awareness of it, by donating a little to this charity, that must be a good thing.
