Fundraiser for The Mary Hare Foundation

Bri Kervella is raising money for The Mary Hare Foundation

Newbury Triathlon 2026 · 6 September 2026

Mary Hare School is a national charity for deaf children aged 4-19. We educate, on average, 160 deaf children through immersion in written and spoken English. Pupils attend from across the UK, to access the education they deserve, making friendships with other deaf children with shared experiences.

Story

Mary Hare School is the largest residential school for deaf children and young people in the UK. We welcome deaf pupils aged 4-19. Our learning and teaching style focusses on written and spoken English, to help pupils develop their language, listening, communication and academic skills. Pupils attend from across the UK, to access the education they deserve, making friendships with other deaf children with shared experiences.

Story:

This September marks my 21st academic year as a teacher at Mary Hare, my third time completing the Newbury Triathlon, and the second time my daughter, Louise, will be joining me as we take on the triathlon challenge together.

We are fundraising for the Mary Hare School's Ivan Tucker Bursary Scheme.

As a non-maintained special school and registered charity (1048386), the cost of each pupil’s education at Mary Hare is funded by their Local Authority. Unfortunately, many pupils go through a stressful Special Educational Needs tribunal process to secure funding, which can take up to 18 months.

For children joining at the start of their GCSEs in Year 10, or their A levels in Year 12, it is crucial they do not miss out on their education. If a young person has not yet secured their funding, Mary Hare offers an intervention place through the Ivan Tucker Bursary Scheme while they wait for their tribunal. If the tribunal is unsuccessful, Mary Hare continues to cover the full cost of their education to ensure their GCSE or A level studies are not interrupted.

The Mary Hare Foundation (1002680) raises funds for the Ivan Tucker Bursary Scheme. Every donation will help provide deaf children and young people with access to the specialist education they need. Thank you for your support!
