Cycling Lands End to John O'Groats · 24 July 2025

The National Autistic Society is here to transform lives, change attitudes and create a society that works for autistic people. There is still so much to do to increase opportunities, reduce social isolation and build a brighter future for autistic people. With your help, we can make it happen.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I work in a local Academy, and I feel passionately about supporting children and teenagers. This summer I plan to do Lands' End to John O'Groats (Lejog) in aid of Autism Awareness. Craig, my husband is going to drive the support vehicle, and I will be cycling solo. This is huge I know BUT it is for a huge cause. Autistic children are being let down. From diagnosis to education. They and their families are fighting a system that won't bend to support them and doesn't have the resources to adapt to their needs. Old ideas and stereotypes remain and are reinforced by media, education, the health care profession and so many other groups/people that affect how they are seen, described and even supported . I have been told several stories where the diagnosis maybe there... they maybe told by relevant professions they may not be able to cope in mainstream but because there aren't enough places they are still Sent to mainstream... how does that work?

In the small circle of people, I know I have heard of several stories like this. I have these stories collated anonymously (child A.. Etc) I am looking for anyone else that may have other stories, these can be made anonymous if need be. They are ammunition to back the call for change. My main email is Barbarac123@hotmail.co.uk.

I have a few stories where the child wasn't able to be diagnosed until they were older. The negative impact has been huge.

The percentage of children being born higher on the scale is increasing more and more. Surely in a world where every child should matter something needs to be done.

The bike ride will be done in aid of Autism Awareness, and SUNBEAMS, (a charity the helps local children with autism). I have been to see Sunbeams and they are more than happy for me to support them, and I am hoping to move forward and support them as much as possible.

The ride I am doing is self-funded and it will take 20 days, over and above the sponsorship for the actual ride, I am looking for sponsors to help with spare tyres, inner tubes, caffeine gels, food for each day, emergency fun in case of breakdown and needing to take the bike to a repair shop.

After re-eading about the young boy of 12 who took his own life because he could no longer cope I am even more committted to trying to get the message across, to try and make people understand and to try and make people understand it needs to be so much easier and quicker for people to access support and be able to bring it to fruition.

Well that's it.. I am totally out of my comfort zone but is a matter close to my heart. Thank you for reading

Thank you so much for your continuing sponsorship it will make a difference and your words of encouragement mean more than you can know. Once again thank you and sending you all lots of love
