In memory of Ben Steel

Ironman Triathlon World Championships · 10 October 2026

We’re Mind, the mental health charity, working across England & Wales. We believe no one should face a mental health problem alone. We’re here for you. Whether you’re stressed, depressed or in crisis. We’ll listen, give support & advice, & fight your corner. Thanks for fundraising for national Mind.

Story

Last year, my family faced the unimaginable. My nephew, Ben, lost his life to suicide after a long and courageous battle with his mental health. He was deeply loved, is missed every day, and we carry him with us in everything we do.

Throughout Ben’s journey, MIND was there, offering support, guidance, and somewhere to turn when things felt overwhelming. Now, as a family, we want to give back in Ben’s memory, and for every person who feels alone, unheard, or unsure where to turn next.

For me, physical challenge has always been my way of working through life’s toughest moments. The harder the road, the more I feel alive, grounded, and connected to purpose. It has shaped who I am and given me a desire not just to achieve, but to inspire.

This year marks a milestone I’ve been working towards for two decades. After completing 13 full Ironman Triathlon races, I am now within reach of a long-standing goal: earning a place at the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii in October.

If I complete either Ironman Lanzarote in May or Bolton 70.3 in June, I will qualify to stand on that start line in October ,ready to swim 2.4 miles, cycle 112 miles, and run 26.2 miles to complete this journey- 15 Full Ironman Events!

But this is no longer just my dream. It’s a mission with deeper meaning.

I am racing for Ben.

I am racing for MIND.

I am racing for everyone fighting a silent battle.

Mental health struggles can feel isolating. But support can change everything. By backing MIND, you help ensure that no one has to face their darkest moments alone.
