Story
This June, Joel and I will be walking the full length of Wainwright's Coast to Coast Path — around 190 miles from St Bees on the Irish Sea to Robin Hood’s Bay on the North Sea. We’ll be doing it the traditional way: completely self-supported, carrying everything we need on our backs and camping along the route. It’s going to be a real test — long days on our feet, steep climbs through the Lake District, unpredictable weather, and the cumulative strain of carrying full packs day after day. For us, though, it’s about more than just the miles — it’s a shared adventure across some of the most beautiful landscapes in England, from the rugged fells of the Lake District to the rolling moors of the Pennines and the North York Moors.
We’re using this challenge to support Fix the Fells, a project run by the Lake District Foundation. The paths we’ll be walking don’t maintain themselves — thousands of boots each year take their toll, and without careful repair and conservation work, these fragile landscapes can quickly erode. Every donation will help protect and restore these iconic routes so that others can continue to enjoy them for generations to come. If you’re able to support us, we’d be hugely grateful.
In the words of the Lake District Foundation...
Repairing and maintaining our ancient network of Lake District mountain paths is an enormous task. Many of the paths have been around for hundreds, if not thousands of years. Despite their age, these paths need help. The combination of millions of feet and the Lake District's weather means that erosion is a constant problem.
Fix the Fells has repaired over 200 sections of paths in the last ten years. Over the next ten years we aim to repair a further 120 paths, whilst continuing to maintain the existing network.
Our work also helps protect the local ecology and heritage. The Lake District is full of rare plant species that are vulnerable to damage when people walk on them. Preventing erosion reduces the volume of soil going into our rivers and streams and improves the water quality too
To deliver this we are looking to raise £5 million from grants, visitors and local businesses and communities. Please donate to Fix the Fells today to help protect and enhance the spectacular Lakeland'
