Story

The Reason?

SASRA is a Christian charity that is very close to our hearts. Jacob has served in the British Army for eleven years and first heard about the charity through former Scripture Reader Steve Penny. We are forever thankful for Steve and the encouragement that he was to Jacob while serving within the armoured side of his regiment.

Since marrying Jacob, Laura has grown to understand the stresses and strains of military life and how challenging it is to be a Christian in that environment. Knowing that there are faithful, Bible-believing Christians across military bases, reaching men and women with the gospel and supporting serving Christians brings us both a lot of joy. We are so thankful to have Scripture Reader Josh Fortune supporting and encouraging Jacob at work amid the heat, stress and strain 'behind the wire.'

After beginning our training, we found out the wonderful news that Laura is expecting a baby! As a tandem is a bicycle made for two and not three, we have decided that it won’t be suitable for Laura to take part in our Barracks-to-Barracks Tandem Ride.

Instead, Jacob will be joined by fellow serving solider and SASRA Member Corporal of Horse Rob Tonkin of the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment.

SASRA has been a help and blessing to Rob over his years of service with materials, books and prayer. Scripture Reader Bob Elliot helped enormously during Rob’s time training in South Wales and Rob benefitted from the ministry of another Reader, Steve Penny, during his years in Windsor. Rob is now a regular attendee of Scripture Reader Josh Fortune’s fellowship group at Hyde Park Barracks.

What we'll be doing:

On Saturday 26 April 2025, Jacob and Rob are cycling in tandem...on a tandem! It'll be a 40-mile 'Barracks to Barracks' trip from Hyde Park Barracks, London to Combermere Barracks in Windsor.
