Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit the Basic24 JustGiving Page.
This years Basic 24 will be in aid of MS. A truly nasty disease that a member of B.R.T is witnessing first hand within his family. Please read below why we are raising money for this charity and why it's personal to our very own iRacing alien, Andy Dawson.
Multiple Sclerosis is a chronic autoimmune condition where the immune system mistakenly attacks the protective covering of nerve fibres, in the brain and spinal cord. Over time, the communication between the brain and the rest of the body becomes disrupted, affecting mobility most commonly. Symptoms can also include numbness, vision problems, balance and cognitive changes. The most common type of MS is Relapsing-Remitting, which involves new or worsening symptoms followed by slow recovery.
Unfortunately, there is no cure for this condition currently however there have been new drugs released in the past 12 months which can slow the progression of the condition, albeit, are restricted to only the most complex cases.
MSRRF, a charity based in the North East of England, was suggested by our long term member, Andy Dawson. Andy’s mum, Judith, was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis when she was young and with the nature of the condition, is progressive through life. Once, Judith was able to go caravaning and hiking however is now restricted to short distances with a walking stick, and for longer distances, an electric wheelchair.
The MSRRF charity, established in 1964, provides complementary therapies including massage, reflexology, vibrogym and AlterG. While the therapies aren’t cures, staying active and addressing muscle issues early helps slow down functional decline. These therapies aid to:
Preserving independence in daily activities
Managing discomfort
Support mental well-being by reducing stress and improving mood
