Walking the Great Glen Way for Pregnancy Associated Osteoporosis UK

Rosie Findlay is raising money for Pregnancy Associated Osteoporosis UK

Walking the Great Glen Way · 8 May 2026

We are an all-volunteer charity, established by those with lived experience, alongside specialists and clinicians. We are the only charity completely focused on this rare devastating bone condition. We work to advance health, education and research and provide information, support and advocacy.

Story

Pregnancy Associated Osteoporosis is a devastatingly cruel disease that broke my back in 9 places at 5 weeks postpartum.

Instead of basking in all the newborn glory, this disease completely robbed me of any “normal” aspect of motherhood and being a first time mum. I was fully bedridden for 9 weeks due to consistent fracturing in my spine. I was unable to care for myself and my daughter in any capacity. Our survival was sorely dependent on the help of my partner, who had to become our full time carer for 8 months.

I wasn’t able to pick up my daughter until she was 6 months old.

Unfortunately many doctors have zero awareness of my rare disease and whilst enduring the most severe pain I’ve ever experienced in my life, I begged many doctors weekly to help find out what was wrong with me but I was repeatedly told that this was ‘normal postpartum back pain’ and not given the correct advice.

After many months of researching my own symptoms, I was finally diagnosed with PAO in December 2025.

My fractured vertebrae are compressed, I’ve lost 6cm in height and my bone density is severely low, putting me at risk of potentially fracturing again. I suffer with back pain daily and I’ll be monitored for the rest of my life.

Not only has this disease affected me physically, but it has also affected me mentally. I’ll never get the time back that I missed with my daughter in the first 6 months of her life. My future is forever changed as I’m no longer able to do the activities I once did due to my low bone density, fracture risk and daily pain. I might also not be able to have another child.

Living through this experience showed me how little awareness and support exists for women affected by PAO. Whose stories all run similar to my own. This is why I’m raising money for Pregnancy Associated Osteoporosis UK, a charity dedicated to supporting women and families facing this condition, raising awareness among healthcare professionals, and helping improve diagnosis and care.

PAO UK is entirely volunteer-run and funded by donations. Your support helps them continue their mission to support UK families impacted by PAO.

Bearing The Weight On Scotlands Spine.

about the walk -

My partner alongside some company, are challenging themselves to walk the length of the Great Glen Way (sometimes referred to as Scotlands Spine).

Usually taking 5-7 days, they are challenging themselves to complete this walk within 4-5. Carrying all their equipment for camping along the way on their backs, to emphasise the pain us PAO mums endure.

Your support would mean the world to all PAO mums 💜
