Story
Our lives changed forever in February. Losing Al created a void that can never be filled. We miss him in ways that words will never fully capture. His laugh, his kindness, his gentle way of making everyone feel seen… such a beautifully rare, genuine soul. Someone I was lucky enough to call my brother‑in‑law.
This year, I’ve begun a fundraising journey in his honour. After a hugely successful plant sale, I’m now planning future fundraisers to support my ultimate goal: completing the London Marathon next year. I’m running to raise funds for the Mouth Cancer Foundation — but even more importantly, I’m running to raise awareness.
If sharing Al’s story helps even one person recognise symptoms sooner, seek help earlier, or gives another family more precious time, then every mile will be worth it.
Last April, Al found a lump. What started small developed into an ulcer, and later a hole (looked like an open sore which refused to heal). On 1st August, he was diagnosed with tongue cancer. He faced everything that followed with unbelievable strength — major surgery in September, then chemotherapy and radiotherapy beginning in November, and later immunotherapy.
In January, we received the devastating news that the cancer had spread and was extremely aggressive. On 25th February, Al passed away in hospital, surrounded by the people who loved him most.
He was 31. He deserved so much more time.
I’m running because cancer stole someone irreplaceable, someone we loved dearly.
I’m running because head and neck cancers often go unnoticed until it’s too late.
I’m running because awareness saves lives.
I’m running for Al — for his memory, for his story, for the love he left behind.
Every donation - big or small - helps fund vital research and gives families more time — time we wish we’d had. It keeps Al’s memory alive in the most meaningful way: by protecting others.
