I'd love to share why I'm taking on the Great North Run this September.

I'm running alongside my daughter Isla, my wonderful friend Tanya, Her Daughter Natasha and her niece Ellie to raise money for the UK Sepsis Trust, a charity that has become incredibly close to our hearts.

Tanya's husband, Michael, showed extraordinary strength after developing sepsis following a difficult cancer operation. His recovery has been nothing short of remarkable. In previous years, he would have been the one organising our support team, cheering us on and making sure everything ran smoothly. This year, he'll be watching from the sidelines, and it will be an absolute honour to run for him.

As a dentist, I also understand and have seen just how devastating sepsis can be. Although it's often associated with serious illness or major surgery, sepsis can develop when the body's response to an infection becomes overwhelming. It can progress rapidly and, without early recognition and treatment, can become life-threatening. Knowing the signs and symptoms—such as confusion, extreme shivering or fever, difficulty breathing, severe pain, mottled or discoloured skin, or feeling that "something is seriously wrong"—can save lives.

Seeing first-hand the impact sepsis has had on someone we care about has made this cause deeply personal. Every step we take is in tribute to his courage, his determination, and the unwavering support he has always shown to us and so many others. We also want to honour the incredible healthcare professionals, family and friends who have helped him through his recovery.

By supporting our run, you're not only helping fund vital research, education and support for those affected by sepsis, but you're also helping spread awareness of a condition that claims thousands of lives every year.
