Ben's fundraiser for Race Against Blood Cancer

Ben Barrett is raising money for Race Against Blood Cancer

Coventry Half Marathon 2026 · 19 April 2026 · Start fundraising for this event

The cure for chemotherapy-resistant blood cancers - such as lymphoma, leukaemia and myeloma - relies on finding stem cell donors with a similar ethnic background; currently 3 in 5 patients from black, Asian, mixed-heritage and minority ethnic groups do not find a match. Race Against Blood Cancer is a charity whose goal it is to increase the volume and diversity of people who register as potentially life-saving donors. It is estimated that there are approximately 2000 people currently seeking a stem cell donor and the chances of a best possible stem cell match vary greatly depend on your ethnicity – while White Northern Europeans needing a donor have a 71% chance of a best possible stem cell match, people from a BAME background have just a 37% chance of achieving the same due to the lack of ethnic diversity on the stem cell and bone marrow register. Race Against Blood Cancer is working to improve outcomes for patients by recruiting potential stem cell donors and raising awareness of the importance of registration. We want a future where every patient has the equal chance of a stem cell match: donors save lives.

Story

I’m fundraising for race against blood cancer and to also spread awareness for blood cancer as a member of my girlfriends family has lymphoma and deals with the charity and they have been a big help to try and help him find a stem cell doner. I hope to raise £500+ for race against blood cancer and to also help find a doner for John O’connor.

In the UK, blood cancer patients from a Global Majority background face significantly lower survival rates compared to White Northern European patients due to a lack of ethnic diversity among registered stem cell donors. One critical factor is the stark disparity in donor match rates—while White Northern European patients have a 70% or higher chance of finding a match, the odds drop to 20% or less for Global Majority patients.

About for race against blood cancer charity

For countless people living with blood cancer and other blood disorders, the search for a matching stem cell donor is a race against time. Finding willing donors could offer them the priceless gift of a second chance at life. It’s simple, the more genetically aligned the donor is with the patient, the greater the chance of a successful transplant. Race Against Blood Cancer is committed to tackling this ethnic imbalance. By recruiting more donors from diverse backgrounds, we aim to close the gap, improve survival rates, and ensure that all patients, regardless of ethnicity, have a fair chance at finding a life-saving match.

This is my first proper half marathon and I aim to do it in 2hrs 10 mins running.
