Story
Hi, my name is Ben, and I live in Eastbourne on the south coast of the UK. I am at stage 4 Follicular Lymphoma and was diagnosed in 2021.
When I found out about my diagnosis it was completely unexpected, as I am sure is the case for many people living with Cancer. I had lost quite a large amount of weight in a relatively short period of time and was experiencing extreme fatigue, luckily my husband encouraged me to go to the doctor. Following numerous scans & tests we got the final diagnosis of Follicular Lymphoma.
I have been very fortunate that I have not had to receive any treatment to date and have been kept on regular watch and wait. Currently I have 3 monthly check-ups.
Follicular lymphoma is a type of blood cancer that affects the lymphatic system—part of your immune system that helps fight infections. It starts in a type of white blood cell called a B-cell, which normally helps protect your body. In follicular lymphoma, these cells grow out of control and build up in places like your lymph nodes, bone marrow, or spleen. While it’s not usually curable, it can be managed for many years, and new treatments are giving people more hope than ever
My personal triumph is coming to terms with the cancer that I have, whilst not letting it dictate what my life holds for me, I live life to the fullest with a positive outlook on everything. Whilst also being appreciative that I will have days where I’m tired, & that my immune system is weakened, and I will pick up things more.
I completed the Brighton 10k in April 2025, This was a huge personal challenge — I’m not the fittest by nature, but the crowd’s energy and the cause kept me going. These events have encouraged me to commit myself to doing something completely out of my comfort zone every year now, hence why I have committed to completing the London Marathon 2026.
