SMA UK is a national charity supporting anyone affected by spinal muscular atrophy, a rare genetic, neuromuscular condition that causes muscle weakness and loss of movement. We offer support and information and advocate on issues important to the SMA Community.

Story

Isabel Turk

Our "Gorgeous Girl," Isabel, was born in December 2003, was diagnosed with type 1 SMA at 5 weeks and died in June 2004, aged just 6 months.

One concise sentence, stark and factual; however, it could never convey the pain and suffering she endured, nor the heartbreak of family and friends, who were destined to observe and grieve helplessly over 23 years.

Laura and I were determined to fundraise to ensure that no child had to suffer needlessly or that their family and friends had to walk in our shoes.

Thankfully, our family, friends and a wider circle of generous people continue to support this amazing charity, bringing our dream closer to reality.

This time, our amazing friend, Ben Court, takes on the Herculean challenge of the London Marathon. The marathon will be the culmination of months of hard work and dedication. If that hard work resonates with you and with our aim to prevent another loss of a baby's life to SMA, ensuring that parents, siblings, family and friends do not have to suffer the devastation of losing a child, please support this incredible charity and Ben's sacrifice. Laura and I are forever in your debt.
