Story
On 24 June, two huge earthquakes struck Venezuela within 40 seconds of each other. The second was the strongest the country has seen in over a century. More than 900 people have died, thousands are injured, and entire neighbourhoods in Caracas and La Guaira have collapsed.
For my family, this isn’t a news story. My wife Kat is Venezuelan. Our daughter is half Venezuelan. Venezuela is my second home. In the days since the earthquake, so many people we love have been affected, friends and family who have lost homes, lost people, and are now trying to survive in the aftermath.
I feel pretty helpless from here, so I wanted to see if there was something we could do to help. I know people like to rally behind a challenge, so I’m running 100km in 10 days. I haven’t really been running much recently, so this is fuelled mostly by naivety, and if that means rallying behind me struggling to run in 30 degree heat, so be it.
Every pound raised goes to the British Red Cross Venezuela Earthquake Appeal. The Venezuelan Red Cross is already on the ground, pulling people from the rubble, running ambulances, treating the injured and setting up shelter for families who have lost everything. They are local. They are there now. And every pound we raise helps them reach more people, faster.
Please give what you can. If you’re a UK taxpayer, tick Gift Aid and the government adds 25% on top at no cost to you. And please share this page, every share brings someone closer to safety.
Thank you, from me, from Kat, from Serena and from everyone we love in Venezuela.
