Ben runs for Sue (and St Christopher’s)

London Marathon 2025 · 27 April 2025 ·
I’ve always wanted to run the London marathon but have never been successful in the ballot. I also didn’t ever feel like there was a charity that meant enough to me for me to ask for sponsorship for from lots of people.
However, that changed for me in May last year when my mother in law (Sue) spent the last week of her life in the St Christopher’s hospice in Crystal Palace. Straight away I knew this was somewhere I wanted to support. Their work is extraordinary and the way they looked after Sue, and all of us, was exceptional.
Sue was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2013 which then metastasised in 2017. Through it all, and with the help of St Christopher’s, Sue was always busy living.
In her last week St Christopher’s made sure it was a family affair, so Sue spent her last few days cuddling Jesse, sharing ice lollies with Marnie, laughing with Ellie and Dexter and Steven, and drinking champagne with her friends.
The marathon will mark almost a whole year without Sue. During which time many of her friends who also happen to have metastatic breast cancer will be making use of the facilities, therapies, and support from St Christopher’s. As a family we want to ensure that St Christopher’s are able to look after Sue’s friends with the love and kindness that they looked after us.
A football coach once told me my super strength was my super speed, so here’s hoping that stands me in good stead!
