Story

Land's End to John O'Groats cycle. Two weeks unsupported and camping all the way!

On 22 June 2025, I will be cycling the length of Great Britain – from Land’s End to John O’Groats – just under 1000 miles in 14 days. I will be cycling every day, camping every night and will be totally self-supported.

But this isn’t just another fundraiser…..

During my journey, I will be meeting with bereaved parents who have lost children to primary bone cancer, as well as individuals and families living with its long-term effects.

On day 4, I will be meeting up with some other fantastic BCRT supporters for coffee and cake in Bristol. On day 6, I'll be stopping off at The Montgomery Unit at the RJAH Orthopaedic Hospital in Oswestry where I will meet the incredible team who work tirelessly to treat patients. And on day 7, I'll be attending BCRT's Summer Picnic Get Together in St Helen's to connect with other parents and families who understand the journey we have been through.

To get me from one end of Great Britain to the other, I'll be riding a specially-designed push bike made by Stanforth Bikes in Hove. 'Mabel' is fully manual and fully loaded with camping gear! Orange was Beth's favourite colour and we've gone to town on the bike! The bike is called Mabel after one of her favourite cartoon characters :)

Why am I doing this?

In 2020, just at the height of the coronavirus pandemic, our 11-year old daughter, Beth, was diagnosed with a very rare form of cancer called Ewings Sarcoma.

After confirming the diagnosis, she was fitted with a special medical line for the administration of chemotherapy drugs on Christmas Eve 2020.

She began her chemotherapy in Southampton hospital on Christmas Day 2020 when she should have been at home.

After nine months of chemotherapy, surgery and finally radiotherapy we received the joyous news that she was all-clear from the disease. We enjoyed nine months of bliss together as a family before the disease returned in the summer of 2022.

The disease returned so aggressively there was nothing we could do to prevent it taking her life and we were told she only had three months left. We made the absolute most of our time together before she passed peacefully from this world in October 2022.

Beth has left a gaping hole in our lives. She was everything to us all and quite simply our lives and those of her friends will never be the same again.

But we would like to do something in her name to make a difference to those who might suffer from this horrendous disease in the future. That's why we have created a special fund under the Bone Cancer Research Trust (BCRT) called 'Love Beth'.

Our mission with the Love Beth fund is simple; we want to raise as much money for research into combating Ewing sarcoma as possible - until it is gone.

Whilst a huge physical challenge, any pain I encounter during training and completing this is journey is insignificant to what Beth endured. She remains my inspiration and my guiding light.

Times are hard and people are often asking for money but if you have a spare pound or more then I guarantee it is going to an extremely worthy cause. Government funding for childhood cancer is pathetically low. We need desperately to fund research otherwise more children will face the same fate as our daughter.

Please give what you can and anything you give is so gratefully received.

Thank you from myself, Beth's mum Aby and most importantly from Beth x
