Story
Following last years successful golf charity marathon, this year Horris Hill are upping the ante with 2 separate events for a fantastic cause. A total of 144 holes and nearly 50 miles over 2 days.
Firstly, on the 13th of June Horris Hill staff are taking on HH parents in a titanic Ryder Cup style 72 hole challenge at Donnington Valley Golf course near Newbury.
Teeing off at 4.30am and finishing at 9pm (roughly/hopefully), this challenge will mean walking nearly 30 miles whilst playing golf continuously for around 17 hours.
The HH staff team consists of Mr Powell, Burn, Lawson and honorary HH employee for the day, Mr Wowk, husband of our head of lower school. Our parent teams is currently TBC
A week later we undertake our second challenge and this time in the pupils turn. On 20th of June, 4 pupils will take on our staff team around our beautiful Horris Hill course on site for the honour of winning the Beardmore-Grey trophy. Once again the format will be 72 holes, teeing off at 9am and finishing, if last year is anything to go by, at 9pm covering roughly 18 miles in that time.
This time the staff team will see Mr Thompson swapped in for Mr Wowk. The pupil team will consist of 4 of our intrepid year 8s.
With both events, morale tends to drop as tiredness kicks in so everyone is welcome along to join us to encourage us and keep us going.
The charity of choice is one close to our hearts, the On Course Foundation. Our Head of Estates, Stephen Burn has been a beneficiary and ambassador for this fabulous charity since 2012 which which looks to aid service men and women in a number of ways who have been injured fighting for and protecting their country.
The benefits of playing golf offer a key part in physical rehabilitation, improving both balance and limb coordination. Camaraderie, competitive spirit and concentration are important too, supporting the psychological recovery of our beneficiaries and helping them find confidence within themselves. Many Service personnel face the daunting challenge of finding employment after leaving the military, something we hope to help them overcome."
The charity has a number of notable ambassadors from the world of sport and entertainment, notably ex Ryder Cup player, captain and European no.1 Colin Montgomery and, until his sad passing in 2016, patron of the charity was the legendary 7 time major winner Arnold Palmer.
