Unless you are affected or know someone struggling with Mental Health it’s difficult to understand. There is often still a stigma associated with it, leaving many to suffer in silence, our aim is to raise awareness and help to prevent suicide.

Sunday 10th September is not only the day when over 60,000 people will take part in the Great North Run, but it is also World Suicide Prevention Day.

Kelly’s Heroes is an amazing charity. It was set up in memory of Kelly Hewitt who tragically died from suicide on December 18th 2018. Kelly was 24.

I didn’t have the privilege of knowing Kelly, but we have many friends in common. Kelly’s Mum, Dad and Sister (Amy) started the charity, and I have seen first hand their hard work, commitment and determination to make a difference by helping those that need help, and they provide this with professional counselling.

In such a short space of time the charity has helped thousands of people. In 2022 the charity delivered 2,600 counselling sessions and this year it will be over 5,000 counselling sessions. The charity is helping children as young as 8, all the way up to adults in their 70s. As the demand for the charity increases, they need more income to fund the professional counselling sessions.

I have had my own mental health battles over the years, and for me exercising is the best way to keep my mind healthy...and considering I’m 20 stone and 6ft 5, that is not always the greatest recipe, so don't worry Sir Mo, I won't be upstaging your farewell!

However, I am going to complete the Great North Run to raise awareness for this amazing charity that continues to make a difference every day to those that need it, to say thank you to Kelly's Mum, Dad, Sister and the staff that deliver the counselling, the Trustees for helping to drive the charity forward and also for Kelly and the thousands of people that die because of suicide each year.

Thank you for reading my “why” and if you can donate it is greatly appreciated.

Keep the messages clean, my Mum and Dad will be reading them! :)
