Story
£10 will fund one potentially life-saving conversation.
£25 can pay for a professional clinician to provide expert oversight, intervention and support for volunteers on the platform.
£250 will fund the training of a new crisis volunteer, who will be able to support hundreds of people and will almost certainly save and change lives.
In 2018 I lost my younger brother, Sam, to Suicide. It was horrific. I decided very early on that I didn't want anyone to feel the way Sam felt ever again. I began volunteering with Shout as a crisis volunteer 3 years ago and have seen first hand the incredible work of this charity supporting people in crisis. When I decided to run this ultramarathon, I knew straight away that I wanted to use it as a way of supporting Shout, the national crisis text line. Shout has enabled over 2 million supportive text-based conversations since it was launched. It saves lives, prevents abuse and provides people with a safe place to talk 24 hours a day, every single day.
As part of this challenge, I am also attempting to recruit volunteers. This extraordinary service relies on ordinary people donating a small amount of time each week to log in at home and have text based conversations with the people who contact the service. You will receive world-leading training, be fully supported by clinical supervision and join a brilliant community of volunteers. The only qualification you need to become a life-saving volunteer is a desire to help. If that's you, please consider applying.
