Story
Atlantic temperate reefs and sea whip communities are vital ecosystem engineers, supporting high biodiversity, protecting shorelines, and driving local economies. They act as essential nurseries, food sources, and shelters for fish and invertebrates. These structures also buffer coastlines from storm damage, reduce erosion, and support commercial fishing and tourism.
However, temperate reefs and sea whips in the Atlantic are dying primarily due to rising water temperatures, increased ocean acidification, and structural damage from fishing gear like bottom trawls. These, combined with poor water quality and sedimentation, cause stress, bleaching, and reduced growth.
The Ocean City Reef Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing and restoring Maryland's seafloor by building artificial reefs off the Atlantic coast. The foundation relies on donations to deploy durable, environmentally safe materials, aiming to improve marine habitat, biodiversity, and fishing opportunities in the area. Any donation helps them save the dying reefs!
