Story
Warwickshire and Solihull Blood Bikes (WSBB) is a volunteer-led charity that provides a free, urgent transportation service for medical items to the NHS across Warwickshire, Solihull, Coventry, and Birmingham. The service operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, all year round.
Key Information
Service Provided: Volunteers transport urgently needed items such as blood products, samples, drugs, human donor breast milk, and medical equipment between hospitals, air ambulance bases, and other healthcare facilities. This service saves the NHS thousands of pounds that would otherwise be spent on transport costs.
Volunteers: The charity is run entirely by unpaid volunteers, including riders, car drivers, controllers, and fundraisers. Riders have advanced riding qualifications, such as from IAM RoadSmart or RoSPA, and undergo rigorous training.
Fleet: WSBB uses a fleet of specially adapted motorcycles, cars, and a van to ensure they can transport different types of consignments in all weather conditions.
Funding: As a charity, it relies solely on community support, donations, and fundraising events to cover operational costs like fuel, maintenance, and new vehicles.
Partnerships: They work closely with local hospitals and the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance (WNAA), ensuring the air ambulance crews have immediate access to blood products at their base to administer at the scene of accidents.
