Story
Hello, and thank you for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page!
I am doing the National Three Peaks Challenge (Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike & Snowdon - one after the other within 24 hours!) to raise money for Alder Hey Children's Charity.
When our son Leo was born at home, our wonderful midwife did a top-to-toe check and told us to get to Alder Hey as soon as we could, as she could see some signs that he may have Down syndrome.
When he was just one day old, the team at Alder Hey did a blood test - and when he was four days old, we got the official diagnosis.
We have been very lucky with Leo - he is a wonderful, happy, funny and charming boy. However, we've had to spend more time in Alder Hey than we would have hoped since Leo was born - and because of that, we've got to see first-hand what an incredible place it is.
When we had to spend some time there at Christmas, we were blown away by how much effort the staff put into making it feel as normal as possible. It's the little things that count - like Leo sitting on Father Christmas' knee for a photo - and they do thousands of little things every year that add up to make a huge difference to the families that go there.
Leo has also benefitted massively from the fabulous facilities at Alder Hey, like the amazing hydrotherapy pool - and we are so grateful to the staff who have worked so hard with him to move him forwards.
The Three Peaks Challenge absolutely terrifies me - since giving up alcohol three years ago, I've got back into hiking - but as I type this I'm definitely not fit enough to complete the challenge comfortably, and there's a lot of work I need to do between now and September!
However, when I'm on Snowdon (the third mountain within the 24 hours), I know that I'll be thinking about Alder Hey and how much I want to help them - even in this small way.
We don't know what complications Leo will face as he gets older - but we feel incredibly reassured to know that this fabulous place is just down the road, ready to help us when we need them.
