Father and Daughter Riding for HEROS
On Monday 1st June, we - Dulcie West and dad Micky West, will be riding in the HEROS Charity Race at Newbury Racecourse, taking on this incredible challenge together to raise money for a charity that means more to us than words can say as well of the battle of the West's!
Dulcie’s Story
I’m Dulcie, I’m 23 years old, and horses have been at the centre of my life since I was 7. I currently work as Lead Retraining Rider at North Farm Stud, home of HEROS.
HEROS doesn’t just change the lives of ex‑racehorses; it changes the lives of the students and everyone who walks through its doors. I see that impact every single day, which is why this charity means so much to me.
I’ve competed in show jumping and dressage for most of my life and also did some pony racing in my mid‑teens. Last year, I rode in the HEROS Charity Race for the first time on the wonderful Shades of May, which gave me an unforgettable introduction to charity racing.
This year is even more special — because I get to share the experience with my dad. Riding alongside him at Newbury, over a mile, for a charity we both love, is something I’ll treasure forever (and hopefully beat him!).
Mickey’s Story
I’m Mickey, and at 61 years old I’m taking on one of the biggest challenges of my life - riding in this race alongside my daughter, who I fully intend to beat!
I last sat on a horse in 2010, and since then I’ve faced a few major hurdles, including a stroke and two hip replacements. But HEROS is all about second chances, so when the opportunity came to ride, I didn’t hesitate.
I’m married to Grace Muir MBE, founder and CEO of HEROS, and I’ve known Grace since our early twenties when we worked together at Kim Brassey’s. In my younger years I rode out for some fantastic trainers, including Henry Candy, Ron Boss, Fred Winter and Mark Usher, and even had the privilege of riding work alongside Lester Piggott and Willie Carson.
I’ve watched HEROS grow from the inside and seen first‑hand the compassion and life‑changing impact it has on ex‑racehorses and the students who care for them. This race isn’t just about getting back on a horse — it’s about giving back to a charity that gives so much to so many and beating my daughter!
