Dock2Dock Half Marathon Swim! · 9 September 2023

Set up by the Eritrean community in London in 2018 we help traumatised unaccompanied young asylum seekers and refugees from the Horn of Africa, providing a warm welcome in a safe space, a refuge from the hostile environment, mentoring and advocacy, and a range of wholesome empowering activities.

Story

Hi everyone,

I'm doing the Dock2Dock swim half marathon(!) in September raising money in memory of Matt for an org that has a big connection for us both.

Some of will know my brother Matt lived and worked in Ethiopia before passing away last year. He was passionate about the region as people, and cultures, he loved and worked alongside. Many of you will also know peer (community) led support, youth work and advocacy is my heart and very much changed my life in a way that informed Matt's values too.

I'm fundraising for Da'aro Youth Project - a special fusion of both these things that I know he would have loved. Da'aro is an amazing community-led organisation set up in response to the high numbers of Eritrean young people sadly taking their own lives once arriving to the UK.

Da'aro works with young asylum seekers and refugees, aged 14-21, who have arrived in London alone from the Horn of Africa.

They provide community meals, 'Injera Club', advocacy for young people navigating care, housing, mental health, asylum and criminal justice systems, trauma-informed wellbeing and mentoring support, and campaigning work.

I know times are tough right now so please feel no pressure to donate - you can also support by sending all your positive thoughts my way on the 9th and that is plenty!

Big love,

Beth x
