Bowel cancer is one of the most common types of cancer, but early detection can make all the difference. I never imagined hearing the word "cancer" in relation to my own health when I was diagnosed last summer. I wasn't ill. I ate well, exercised regularly, and felt great. But life has a way of surprising us.

In May 2024, I noticed a tiny amount of blood when I went to the toilet. I felt fine otherwise, so I brushed it off. It was my only symptom-and it could have been so easy to ignore. But I casually mentioned it to my best friend Hannah while we were out running. She didn't let it go.

Hannah gently (and persistently!) encouraged me to see a doctor. I kept putting it off-like so many of us do. I was too busy, always putting others first. But eventually, I listened. That decision changed my life.

The doctor initially thought it might be a pile and gave me a test kit. I didn't send it off. Weeks later, the hospital called to chase it up. That's when I realised it might be serious. I finally sent the sample, and soon after, l was booked for a colonoscopy. I even cancelled the first appointment because I didn't want to deal with it. But I went to the next one-with Hannah by my side.

That day changed everything. The tests confirmed I had bowel cancer.

"You have cancer-and it's large." That's all I remember hearing.

What followed was a whirlwind of tests and consultations. But I was incredibly lucky. The cancer was caught early. I didn't need chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or a stoma. Surgery alone was enough because they had caught it, just in time.

This experience has changed me. I've learned to put myself first, to listen to my body, and to never ignore the small signs.

I'm sharing my story because I want others to know how important it is to act early. Don't ignore anything unusual—no matter how small. Early screening and prompt medical attention can save lives. It saved mine.

The NHS Bowel Cancer Team were incredible. And Hannah—my best friend and my rock—was there every step of the way. I know it was hard for her too.

So now, by doing a Skydive with 6 friends we are fundraising to give something back. To support the amazing people who helped me, and to help raise awareness so others can catch it early too.
