Coast to coast walk for care leavers

Beth Freedman is raising money for The Spark Foundation

Coast to coast · 5 May 2026

For most young people, the transition to independence is gradual, supported, and forgiving. For care leavers, it is often sudden, unsupported, and high-risk. Our grants (up to £700) help them take crucial steps towards setting up home, developing skills, or gaining a job.

Story

Care leavers enter the adult world without the gentle and gradual support which many of us were privileged to receive. On 5th May, I started an attempt to walk Wainwright’s Coast to Coast, 192 miles from St Bees in Cumbria to Robin Hood’s Bay in Yorkshire over 19 days. I am doing this to challenge myself, improve my fitness and spend some wonderful time with friends and family along the way. I am now over halfway there with about 115 miles completed and only one large blister slowing me down but still on track. It wasn’t intended to be a sponsored event but so many people have asked me that I searched for a cause that felt important. A few weeks ago, I read an article in the newspaper about research that showed that care leavers who received a £1000 grant are more likely after a year to be in a job, stable housing and a stable relationship. This seemed such a huge gain to cost ratio that I searched for a charity that would support care leavers. The Spark Foundation is a small charity with low overheads who provide grants direct to care leavers. If you wish to sponsor my walk please consider giving to this very important cause.
