Story
Saving Saints and Big Paws Welfare love and understand the world of big dogs. If you love dogs, don't mind hair and the odd bit of slobber on your clothes, join us. We'd love to sit with you and chat all things dog, sharing a cup of tea and a Bonio or two!
To keep rescuing big paws in need we to raise £24,000 every year. Every £1 goes to a dog in need and we are all volunteers, with no paid staff. Please support us by fundraising or donating what you can.
In the photo here is St Bernard Mildred - just one St Bernard that our charity has rescued. She is greeting us at the end of our 2024 Morecambe Bay walk at Grange-over-Sands with her adopter Ian.
On Sunday 24 May 2026, we will be walking with Michael Wilson one of the official King's guides to the Kent Estuary on the historic bay walk across the bay from Arnside to Grange. Although the walk dates back to the era of Henry VIII and the original route was from Hest Bank to Kents Bank, due to the soft sand at Hest Bank therefore the route is now Arnside to Grange.
The walk will take 3-4 hours covering a distance of 5.5-7.5 miles from Arnside to Grange. Changeable weather and a varying terrain will be encountered. First and foremost you should be able to walk up to 7.5 miles. Underfoot, Arnside to the shore includes sand, footpaths, lanes and marshland. The bulk of the crossing is flat sand often rippled and sometimes covered in water. Half way across you will navigate the Kent River where you can expect an average depth of up to 2ft (60cm) for a distance of some 50m. The final leg of the walk is over marsh: this is a clear pathway but may sometimes be slippery. Please ensure that all those under 18 taking part in the walk are supervised by an adult at all times.
The walk start time is around 9.30 am (TBC due to tidal changes) but you will need to arrive in Arnside before the event to allow time to check in, make your way to the start line and attend the safety briefing. We will be meeting at the slipway opposite The Albion Pub, Arnside. As the walk is one way, the best thing to do is to park at Grange over Sands and get the train over to Arnside which takes just over 5 mins. Northern Trains run Sunday service from Grange-over-Sands leaving at 8.27 am and 9.14 am in time for the walk start time (adult train fare £3.30). Parking is available near the station at Lindale Road, LA11 6EH and Windermere Road, LA11 6EQ in Grange-over Sands.

Guides Over Sands Guidelines
Please ensure that you are fit to walk and that if you a bringing a dog, they are also able to cope with a 7.5 mile walk across sand.
Please read the guidance notes below carefully. Please ensure you bring a drink, snack, suncream, waterproof and wear walking shoes that you can easily remove when walking across the sands. If bringing a dog, please note you will not be able to let it off led as there are sheep on Grange marsh and you must ensure they are kept under close control.
