Story

The Big Walk - 53 Miles in 24 Hours

On the 24th Feb 2021, my lovely Dad, Simon, passed away having been diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease. In May 2014, my good friend Chris, lost his Mum, Diane, to the very same disease after a prolonged battle over a number of years.

It horrendous, cruel, hopeless...and needs to **** off.

So, we're raising money.

My Dad had a few passions in his life, none moreso than Cricket and Football. So myself, Chris and our good friends Alex and Paul are walking from Somerset County Cricket Club in Taunton, to Ashton Gate Stadium, home of our beloved Bristol City. My Dad, was a season ticket holder (sufferer?!?) for more than 20 years, alongside the rest of us, so its seems the fitting place to end. Its a distance of roughly 53 miles, and then plan is to complete this walk within 24 hours, arriving at Ashton Gate on the 10th April 2023 in time for Bristol City's home fixture vs Middlesbrough.

Motor Neurone Disease is absolutely appalling. As of this time, there is no known cure and the majority of those diagnosed, sadly die within 2 years. Its a completely hopeless diagnosis. The only way that changes is funding. So every pound we can raise brings that date of treatment and hopefully eventual cure ever so slightly closer.

Any support is hugely appreciated.

About the charity

Former Liverpool, Bradford City and Bolton Wanderers footballer Stephen Darby and close friend and British Forces Veteran Chris Rimmer have partnered together to launch the Darby Rimmer MND Foundation. Stephen and Chris both have Motor Neurone Disease and have created a Foundation to create awareness of MND, to fund and assist research into the illness with the quest of finding a cure for the illness, to raise funds and offer grants to those with MND, as well as creating a network to help provide information and emotional support network for those diagnosed with the disease.
