Story

UPDATE: Due to a head injury in the first section of the challenge, the Welsh 3000s challenge is going to be pushed back to hopefully August. Dad is ok and recovering but it was about getting down safely. This is still happening but it will have to be the second attempt!

Two grade 1 scrambles (Crib Goch and Tryfan)

Ash and Andrew are going to complete the Welsh 3000s in May 2025.

The challenge is to be at the top of all 15 highest mountains in Wales in 24 hours. We plan to do it in 15. We will end up doing more like 50km, 3,800m elevation and 18 hours by the time you include getting up to the first peak and getting down from the last peak.

We’ve completed the national 3 peaks and the Yorkshire 3 peaks and this is our next mountain challenge. For two people who spend a lot of their life either running, trail running or hiking mountains all over Snowdonia, this seemed like the obvious choice.

Training has already been well under way for the last couple of years with this plan being a long one in the making. We have completed all legs of the challenge in practice, however never have we come close to doing it all in one go.

We are doing the challenge to raise money for Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue who do an incredible job 24/7. The group are run completely by volunteers but have a high running cost for equipment and training. The volunteers at OVMRO and other mountain rescue centres around England and Wales are incredibly selfless people who give up so much of their life to keep the general public (us) safe in the mountains.

You never know when you may need to call on mountain rescue. Even the most experienced climbers/hikers can get themselves into trouble. The mountains in Snowdonia are unforgiving and beautiful in equal measures.

We are super excited to take on this challenge next year, I am under absolutely no illusion that this will be the most difficult thing we have ever done. We have mountain trips and half marathons lined up in the next year all in the name of training!

Anything you can give to this amazing charity is much appreciated.

Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Organisation (OVMRO), or Sefydliad Achub Mynydd Dyffryn Ogwen as we are known in the native Welsh language, is a voluntary mountain rescue team responding to incidents in the mountains and valleys surrounding the Ogwen Valley, Glyderau, and Carneddau mountain ranges and surrounding area in northern Snowdonia. We are on-call 24 hours a day, throughout the year.
