Sands is the charity speaking up about pregnancy and baby loss, saving babies’ lives and supporting bereaved families. Together, we are saving babies’ lives and improving maternity safety and bereavement care through research, training and campaigning.

Story

Working closely with the Rosie Hospital the Cambridge University Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology started the Pregnancy Outcome Prediction Study (POPS) in 2008, and in 2020 we embarked on POPS2. These are studies which aim to identify tests which can predict complications associated with stillbirth. Our work aims to modernise methods for assessing the risk of complications of pregnancy associated with dysfunction of the key organ which sustains the baby in the womb, i.e. the placenta.

This baby loss awareness week we acknowledge the millions of parents who have lost a baby. Our research team are working to try and reduce the number who will experience this tragedy in the future.

If you are interested in finding out more about the POPS studies or would like to consider participation in POPS2 more information can be found at:

During baby loss awareness week our department will be fundrasing for Sands, the stillbirth and neonatal death charity. The charity operates across the UK: supporting anyone affected by the death of a baby; working in partnership with health professionals to ensure that bereaved parents and families receive the best possible care; and promoting improvements in practice and funding research that could help to reduce the loss of babies’ lives.

SANDS depend on the amazing energies of supporters to raise the vital funds that they need to deliver the wide range of services that they offer.
