The Updated Story

Well, we did it! A fantastic achievement for a team of mostly beginner cyclists. Physically tough, but great fun too, supporting each other along the way and discovering new parts of the Morecambe Bay area: Buddhist temples, forgotten villages, a few crazy steep hills. Only Dave managed to get lost, but to be expected perhaps…… Cheryl thought it was a good idea to avoid the underpass and cycle directly over the A590 to save time (and risk her life). We didn’t achieve under 8 hours, but were delighted nevertheless to finish in 9.5hours (although this did mean we had amend the evening care visits a little as a result.....)

Sinead admitted, “I’ve very nervous, yes” before she started. And was deservedly proud when she and 4 yrs old Isaac safely handed on the baton. Sam was paranoid about getting it completely wrong for everyone, but in fact got it completely right.

It was wonderful to watch people push their own personal boundaries and succeed for the team and for the cause. A real privilege to be part of something so collaborative and helping others in need.

Please recognise our achievements and make a donation to our wonder St Johns Hospice, celebrating their 40th year. We all know someone who has benefited from their services, so let’s make sure they are still here for us when perhaps we need them.

On 13th Sept, a team of 8 Bluebird Carers are cycling the stunningly beautiful 80 mile Morecambe Bay Cycleway as a relay event. This is not a team of expert cyclists: this is a team of willing volunteers looking to challenge their personal limitations for an important local cause. Starting in Barrow at 7am with Alyson, each member of the team will complete a set leg of the route and hand on to their colleague, with Rachel picking up the final leg through to Glasson Dock. The team are aiming to complete the route in under 8 hours. If they do, this will be a fantastic team effort for a group of people who otherwise rarely cycle.

St John’s Hospice is a local charity which provides free palliative care to patients with life shortening conditions. Our services cover a population area of 250,000 people in North Lancashire, South Lakes and parts of North Yorkshire. We have been caring for our community every minute of every day since 1986.
