Story
Thanks for visiting my page! I am running the London Marathon dressed as a brain to raise funds for the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society Tissue Bank.
The Tissue Bank is a dedicated brain donation service which allows people to donate their brain, spinal cord and other tissues to research. Without the tissue bank, there would be no way for people with MS to donate their tissues to research after they die.
A lot of research can be done using models, or in a glass dish, but it is vital to understand MS within human tissue in order to better understand the condition and how to treat it! Only by understanding this uniquely human condition in human tissue itself, can we look to find better treatments.
I am raising funds directly for the MS Society Tissue Bank, however it works in conjunction with the Parkinson's UK Brain Bank and both are based at Imperial College London. By pooling expertise and resources the three-way partnership enables it to be a UK wide donation scheme, facilitating donations from the as far north as the Shetland Islands, right down to bottom of Cornwall!
I'm also hoping to spread some awareness about brain donation by doing this - almost anyone can donate their brain, people with and without neurological conditions. If you're interested in what that involves please do check out the Tissue Bank website or watch the videos below.
I will be running the marathon dressed as a brain - this will be in the hope of breaking the Guinness World Record for fastest marathon as a human body part (male)! When I originally signed up, the record was 3 hours 30 minutes... it is now 3 hours 15 minutes.... wish me luck!!
Do check back here for updates on how the costume is coming along.
Any amount of money put towards this fundraiser is greatly appreciated, I'll be thinking of you all as I run around in the costume!!
Cheers,
Rory
