Story
I'm suspicious of people doing events "for charity".
I figure, if we're being honest, the alleged do-gooder is really jumping out of a plane, cycling across Europe or (in my case) running the Hackney Half Marathon because they want to do the thing, and not because it's the best way to raise funds for charity.
However, over the last year, I've been learning a bit about Alzheimer's Disease and I figure it might be something worth throwing some money at. So, if you fancy donating, that would be very cool of you. It might even help the lives of people around you and will probably make you even more attractive than you already are (which, I'm guessing, is already reaaally attractive).
Not convinced yet? Check out these depressing facts:
Dementia is the UK's biggest killer, accounting for 11% of deaths in 2022. Alzheimer’s is the most common cause (60-70% of cases).
Chances are you'll have encountered it in some form via an older relative, family friend or loved one. It's a disease that affects cognitive functions, steals away the basic ability to look after yourself, and even to recognise the faces of loved ones. All in all, very not cool.
Alzheimer’s Society is the only dementia charity in the UK that funds all types of dementia research, from biomedical through to clinical and care research.
So, give me some money? And in exchange, I'll run the race that I was going to run anyway. Not fast, by the way. This isn't a speed thing - I'm going to be plodding, slow and steady, full tortoise-mode. But hopefully some good will come of it.
Thanks,
Brendan x

At Alzheimer’s Society we’re working towards a world where dementia no longer devastates lives. We do this by giving help to those living with dementia today, and providing hope for the future.
