Anam Cara is a national organisation founded by bereaved parents. We provide a range of bereavement support services throughout the 32 counties. More importantly, we offer peer support and understanding to families who have experienced the death of a child. Each year in Ireland about two thousand families experience the death of a son or daughter. For some, the death may have been expected through illness or a life-limiting condition. For others, it was unexpected through stillbirth, an accident, suicide or substance abuse. Anam Cara’s online and face to face services are available to all parents regardless of age or circumstances of their child’s death and are available for as long as necessary. At Anam Cara we focus on the similarities of our loss rather than the differences and provide a level of support and understanding that others cannot offer. Our bereavement as parents unites us. Anam Cara currently has nine active local groups meeting regularly throughout the country. All Anam Cara services are offered free of charge to bereaved parents and families, and as we do not receive government funding, we rely heavily on public fundraising to fund the costs of our local groups and events. We are hugely grateful to any support you can give us. Thank you!

Story

Commit Gym is coming together as a team to raise funds for a cause close to our hearts – Anam Cara.

40+ of our members are travelling to compete in the HYROX Madrid event, pushing our limits to support Anam Cara. By participating in this competition, we aim to raise awareness and funds for this incredible charity.

Anam Cara is a charity that provides support and guidance to families who have experienced the loss of a child. Their compassionate services help bereaved parents navigate the difficult journey of grief and healing. By supporting Anam Cara, we can contribute to their vital work and make a meaningful impact in the lives of those who need it most.

The Armagh branch of Anam Cara was established by Michael and Maria McEnery after the loss of their daughter Annabel who died of a spinal tumour when just 14 months old. In the aftermath of Annabels passing Mac and Maria struggled to come to terms with her loss and it was only when they received support from Anam Cara they learned to journey on while celebrating the life of Annabel. They recognised the vital support that Anam Cara provides and set up the Armagh group, along with 2 other parents who also has sadly lost a child, which continues to meet monthly to provide a safe environment for parents to share the stories of their wonderful children. The Anam Cara website provides a range of support including videos such as this support for Dads grief in which Mac and Maria talk about managing their grief https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=h3o87X4oA9c. Annabel would have been 18 this year.

Every penny raised through our participation in the HYROX Madrid event will directly benefit Anam Cara and their invaluable services. By supporting Anam Cara, you will be making a difference in the lives of bereaved families, offering them support, understanding, and hope during their most challenging times.
